Student Services

One of the advantages of attending Horizon University is that the key administrators, faculty members and counselors are not only easily accessible but are able to spend considerable amount of time in providing all types of counseling needs of the students. Counseling hours are: 9:00 AM through 6:00 PM., Monday through Friday.

Academic Advising

Counseling on overall academic planning, course selection, scheduling, and other types of academic counseling needs of students are provided by the faculty, head of respective academic departments, dean of academic, and dean of student. The Academic Deans provide advisement on such important academic matters and concerns as long-range course schedule planning, program requirements for graduation, academic performance, and transfer credits. Dean of the student also provides counseling on personal problems and any other matters that are deemed important to the students.

Career Planning

There is a growing demand for bilingual ordained pastors, educators, and praise leaders by the Korean-American ethnic churches and bilingual practical nurse in medical facilities in the United States. Therefore employment possibilities upon graduation are expected to be very high. Also, the nursing shortage in medical facilities is well noted. Upon graduation, job placement will be greatly facilitated. In fact, jobs associated with the ethnic Christian churches are the fastest growing segment of employment within the immigrant-dominant Asian ethnic community in the United States.

At this time, Horizon has no formal placement services, but we are committed to developing these by the time of our first graduating class. Our faculty and administration are committed to assisting our students in every way possible to fulfill their goals of becoming stewards of the world’s well-being. Without jobs, they cannot do this. It is our responsibility to ensure that they have the greatest possible chance of gainful and meaningful employment. Their success in this signals our own success.

International Student Services

The Office of Students Services is available to assist international students in adjusting to the university and to the new social environment. The staff provides orientation for new and continuing international students; counseling on personal, academic, and financial matters; advisement on immigration matters; and information about housing and transportation.

Housing Policies

The university does not operate a dormitory or other housing facility, but will assist students in locating adequate housing near the campus. Some students find housing in a local residence hotel; others share an apartment, or rent a room from members of a local church.
The university reserves the right to approve or disapprove of housing on a case-by-case basis if there is concern for your academic or spiritual welfare.

Meals

The University does not operate a cafeteria. A student lounge is provided for students who wish to bring their meals from home.

Sports
Horizon maintains an intramural sports program throughout the fall and spring semesters. Basketball, badminton, and ping pong are available for both men and women.

Clubs

We encourage you to form student-led clubs around common interests. Faculty and staff members are available for advice, and to help students access university resources. Typical interests include hiking, sports, and reading and discussing particular books.

Student Government

All registered students are members of the Student Association. The purpose of the student government is to promote Christian fellowship among students and to advance the kingdom of God and the mission of Horizon University. Activities of the Association are supported through a student fee and individual gifts. The officers of the Association—President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer—are elected annually by the members.
The Student Council consists of three representatives from each class plus the student body president. These students serve as a “sounding board” for the administration regarding policies that affect the students. They are also responsible for planning certain student activities such as clubs and social events.

Open House

Each semester, one day is “open.” Prospective Horizon students are invited to visit the campus, sit in on a course, and consider the prospect of attending Horizon.

Chapel Ministry

The devotional life of the university community is nurtured by chapel services conducted by faculty members and guests. As worship service is integral to students’ Christian formation, regular attendances required of all students.

Student-led worship teams are responsible for planning and leading music and other creative arts during the chapel services. If you are musically talented, you may be asked to share a vocal or instrumental special during these services. Student-led media teams oversee audio and video equipment for chapel services and special events. If you are interested in serving in one of these areas and would like to receive training, contact the Dean of Students.

Student Ministry

It isn’t surprising that, at a university dedicated to training for Christian leadership, many student activities result from students engaging in ministry. As a student at Horizon, you are required to participate in a ministry, typically through your local church. (See the Academic Information section of this catalog for details.) Student ministry is much more than a requirement—it is the heartbeat of men and women who are ready to give their lives to serving the Lord, His Church, and the world. While engaging in ministry, you will also enjoy fellowship and develop friendships that may last a lifetime.

Academic Computer Lab

Whenever possible, we encourage you to bring your own computer to Horizon. If you do not have a computer, or if you are away from your computer when you need to type a paper or conduct research, you are welcome to use the resources of the Academic Computer Lab.
