- Regular attendance of all classes
- Successful completion of all tests, papers and assignments for all classes with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
Graduation Requirements:
- Provide an opportunity for students to learn proper vocal technique and gain confidence in singing.
- Develop student’s ability to play guitar and keyboard.
- Enable students to be able to read musical notation and understand basic music theory
- Integrate a historical, biblical and theological understanding of worship and music in the church setting
- Prepare worship leaders and musicians for worship ministry in churches

- International students must be enrolled in a bachelor’s degree* program at Horizon Institute to maintain their student visa. The certificate program does not replace or substitute for the bachelor’s degree. It can be added to your program to provide an additional certificate. It is possible for the courses for the certificate to be used toward graduation for the bachelor’s degree. Students should talk to an academic advisor to integrate the certificate program requirements into your bachelor’s program.

Course Descriptions
AM100 Music Theory(4 credits)– This course provides an introduction to reading musical notation, including key signatures, scales, modes, intervals, triads, seventh chords, inversions, and rhythm. The course also provides basic skills in sight-singing, developing the listening ear and the ability to identify and sing intervals. The course provides the basics of music theory needed for leading worship.
AM105 Worship Foundations (4 credits) – This course introduces the biblical and theological foundations for worship in the church. Students will explore music and worship in the Old and New Testaments. Students will consider and evaluate worship traditions and current worship practices in light of their study of the Biblical and Theological foundations of music and worship.
AM106 History of Music in the Church (4 credits)–This course provides a foundational study of worship theology and practice and then surveys 2000 years of church worship history, from Pentecost to the present, examining the role of music and the arts in the context of changes and cultural adaptations in worship theology and practice.
AM110 Vocal Class (2 credits)– A group class for developing good basic vocal singing technique. Students will learn principles and habits of singing and put them into practice in a small class setting.
AM111 Keyboard(2 credits)– A group class for developing basic skills in playing the keyboard. Students will learn good technique and begin learning to play the keyboard. Students will learn to play using traditional musical notation, and will also learn how to play off chord charts.
AM112 Guitar(2 credits)—A group class for developing basic skills in playing guitar. Students will learn good technique and begin learning play the guitar. Some basic music theory will be included. Much of the time will be devoted to learning to play songs utilizing chord charts.
AM210 Advanced Vocal Class (2 credits)-A group class for developing good vocal technique and gaining confidence in singing. Singers will learn to sing in different styles while maintaining good technique.
AM211 Advanced Keyboard (2 credits)—A group class for developing intermediate to advanced skills in playing keyboard. Students will gain proficiency in playing songs with more difficult chords and more difficult keys.
AM212 Advanced Guitar (2 credits)—A group class for developing skills in guitar, building upon the earlier class. Students will gain proficiency in playing songs with chord charts and will develop confidence playing more difficult chords, and in playing in more difficult keys. (Student may substitute Advanced Keyboard, AM211)
AM225 Worship Design and Leadership (4 credits)—A study of the principles and practice of designing effective worship services and an introduction to various design models for worship services. The course will provide helpful resources and suggestions about how to go about designing a worship service. Students will be given opportunity to design worship services. They will also gain valuable principles for leading worship.
AM300 Working with Worship Teams (4 credits)—This course is devoted to developing the skills needed to lead a worship team: arranging music, creating chord charts, working with instrumentalists, working with vocalists, recruiting and managing worship teams, how to plan for and conduct a rehearsal, gaining confidence to lead the congregation in worship.

Course Description
CE 103 Principles of Education for Children (4 credits) –The Course provides a foundational understanding of education—both philosophy and methodology— especially focused on the education of young children. Student will be introduced to topics such as curriculum development, lesson planning, teaching methods, learning styles, developmental theory and education. Students will also consider how biblical and theological principles might be integrated in one’s philosophy of educating young children.
CE 105 Development in Early Childhood (4 credits)
This course introduces students to the developmental areas of young children including cognitive, physical, lingual, social, emotional, and motor skills of developing children. This course will develop students’ skills and competencies so that they will be more effective teachers.
CE 210 Fundamentals for Early Childhood Education (4 credits) —The course provides an introduction to early childhood education including issues such as: child development and learning, assessment of young children, family relationships, and evaluating curriculum for developmental effectiveness. A particular focus of the course is devoted to developing a meaningful, developmentally appropriate preschool curriculum.
HE 215 Health and Wellness in Preschool Environments (4 credits)—This course is designed to introduce issues of health and wellness in early childhood education. The course focuses on developing a preschool environment with good nutrition, safety, and healthful practices.
CE 220 Classroom Management for Preschool Teachers (4 credits)—The course introduces a variety of applied skills that enable the teacher to provide effective classroom management. These skills should be integrated into the whole of the curriculum and in the practice of teaching. Good classroom management provides a foundation for academic achievement and is necessary for effective teaching.
CE 225 Creative Learning Experience for Children (4 credits)—This course provides a study of the guidelines for designing and presenting creative learning experiences for very young children. This course also studies the many different kinds of creative expressive activities through plays, music and arts and their effectiveness. Students will learn to develop lessons plans for art, language, science, music, cooking, Bible and other extra curricula. They will be able to design any learning activity es in developmentally appropriate ways and integrate any theme to their lesson plan.
CE 340 Administration and Supervision (4 credits)—This course presents a review and analysis of the state of California’s laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to the operation of day care centers and preschool programs. It also provides the basic tools for administration and supervision of a church sponsored early childhood education program.
CE 350: Curriculum in Early Childhood Learning (4 credits)
Curriculum in early childhood learning is designed to introduce the theory of how children think and the best way for them to learn in their situated environment. This knowledge will aid in the construction and use of curriculums for children in their overall development as individual and as a group in the daycare or preschool environments.
